How to avoid lingering tobacco smoke in hotels and restaurants? - Atlanta Healthcare

Did you know 52.6% of men and 4.9% of women smoke cigarettes in Delhi?

There is a high probability that you are sitting amongst a smoker within a 50-meter radius of your office.

This is not news.

But, the “Impact of ETS” would definitely be and that’s why we need to talk about it.

What is ETS - Environmental Tobacco Smoke?

Environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) also known as passive smoking refers to exposure to tobacco smoke – not from your smoking, but from being exposed to someone else's cigarette, cigar, or pipe smoke which releases side stream smoke that contains 7,000 chemicals, including 69 cancer-causing ones.

ETS is smoke you don’t mean to breathe in and it releases harmful chemicals into the air that affects people in the surrounding environment.

How does the health of a non-smoker compare with a smoker when exposed to Environmental Tobacco Smoke?

Various studies have been able to establish an equivalence between an active smoker and a passive smoker. For example- it is thought that someone exposed to ETS, will breathe in the same amount of the following contaminants as if they actively smoked one cigarette:

  1. The same amount of carbon monoxide in one or two hours,
  2. The same number of smoke particles in eleven hours,
  3. The same amount of acrolein in seven hours, and
  4. The same amounts of nicotine and hydrogen cyanide in fifty hours.

And the various Health Impacts resulting in exposure To ETS are:
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Heart Disease
  • Lung cancer
  • Respiratory Irritation
  • Effects on Fetus of Pregnant Workers
  • Allergic Reaction
  • Headache, Sore Throat, and more

On that account, the Hospitality industry has to factor in the preferences and choices of every customer segment, including those who like to smoke. The interest in indoor air quality is steadily increasing among Hospitality business owners.

How can the "Hospitality" industry tackle Environmental Tobacco Smoke?

Members of the hospitality business world actively take precautionary measures in ensuring the well-being of their customers and employees within the office.

The simple solution that can be implemented in Hotels or Restaurants, is to:

  1. Restrict smoking within the vicinity of your office.
  2. Create designated smoking zones with effective air purification systems.
  3. Last but not least, ensure appropriate ventilation and air filtration within the active-duty workplace.

As per our six-month-long survey, asking people to smoke in an open area randomly can seem cost-effective, but that’s hardly practical in the long run, both from your businesses and client’s perspectives.

So we found that the most effective way to prevent secondhand smoking was to introduce Smoke-removal Cabins, as it:

  1. Respects the needs of smokers & non-smokers.
  2. Improves air quality of the surrounding area.
  3. Attracts more customers.
  4. Protection from passive smoking.
  5. No complaints from non-smokers.
  6. No lingering smoke that can cause serious health implication.
  7. Employees/customers not smoking right outside is good for your brand.
  8. Reduces sick leave rate & boosts the productivity of employees.
  9. Encourages customers to revisit your establishment.
  10. Increases footfalls to your hotel/restaurant.
